In order to implement to GI Act of India, Craft Development Institute has set up a Pashmina Testing and Quality Certification Centre (PTQCC) in the year 2013. Initially the centre was involved in carrying out the testing certification and labelling of “Kashmir Pashmina” only. For the year 2023 onwards the centre has been involved with testing labelling and certification of additional 5 under GI crafts, namely ‘Kashmir Sozni’ ‘Kani Shawl’ ‘Kashmir Walnut Wood Carving’ ‘ Kashmir Paper Machie’ and ‘ Khatamband’.
CDI Srinagar is an autonomous Institute established by the office of DC-Handicrafts, Ministry of Textiles, Government of India and the Department of Industries & Commerce (Directorate of Handicrafts), Government of Jammu & Kashmir in February 2004. CDI is managed by an Executive Committee headed by the Administrative Secretary (Industries and Commerce), Government of Jammu & Kashmir.
The Craft Development Institute (CDI) adopts a holistic approach to handicrafts development by maximizing the potential of skill-based activities, in as many ways as possible. Located in Srinagar, CDI draws inspiration from the rich heritage of arts and crafts in Jammu & Kashmir and brings together various stakeholders, individuals and agencies working in the sector to co-partner in implementing a sustainable development process. By providing a forum for creative exchange and knowledge creation across design, management and technology, CDI endeavours to create new avenues for innovation and entrepreneurship in handicrafts.
